Founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary has grown to over 290 acres of natural beauty. It is a place of discovery, exploration, and learning and a great place to get in touch with nature. The sanctuary includes native grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, a lake, and a variety of plants, trees, and grasses. The sanctuary is home to a broad range of animal species, over 400 different bird species, and a huge variety of wildflowers. It is truly an amazing place to observe nature in its purest state and is an important haven for local wildlife. Some of the notable species you can find at the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary include white-tailed deer, coyotes, armadillos, flying squirrels, wild turkeys, kestrels, hawks, doves, and quail.
